 On September 28th, 1918, Henry Tandey, a British soldier serving with the 5th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, distinguished himself during the final phases of World War I. Tandey's actions on that day became particularly famous due to an encounter he had near the French village of Marcoing.

During a battle in the vicinity of Marcoing, Tandey came face to face with a wounded German soldier. This German soldier, weakened and unarmed, looked directly at Tandey but made no attempt to attack him. Tandey, displaying remarkable compassion and perhaps a sense of mercy amid the horrors of war, chose to spare the German soldier's life and allowed him to retreat.

The significance of this encounter lies in speculation that the wounded German soldier Tandey spared was none other than Adolf Hitler. Hitler himself claimed that he was wounded in the leg during the Battle of Marcoing and temporarily blinded by a gas attack, and that he was rescued and spared by a British soldier. Some accounts suggest that this soldier could have been Henry Tandey.

While the exact veracity of this encounter remains uncertain, the story has captured the imagination of many, as it represents a moment where history could have taken a drastically different turn if Hitler had indeed been killed on that day. Regardless of the identity of the soldier, Henry Tandey's act of mercy has become a symbol of humanity amid the brutality of war.
